Samsung is reportedly set to launch a “Special Edition” of its Galaxy Z Fold 6 on October 25, according to a Korean publication. The release follows previous rumors of a late September debut, which did not materialize. The Special Edition Galaxy Z Fold 6 will feature a thinner profile at 10.6mm and boast larger display sizes of 6.5 inches and 8 inches.

Leaked images have shown a new camera module design and a distinctive “brushed” effect on the back, with a gold accent on the frame. This Special Edition will primarily be available in China, with limited availability in other regions. Samsung hopes that this new model will attract consumers to its foldable devices, especially after losing its lead in foldable market share to Huawei during Q1 2024.

Industry analysts suggest that the improvement in the crease issue may be due to the use of Ultra Flexible Glass (UFG) for the first time. UFG is a high-strength panel that is slightly thinner around the crease, offering a more seamless look. Foldable display technology has advanced significantly since the first Galaxy Fold launched in 2019.
Despite these advancements, the challenge of a visible crease due to the underlying hinge has persisted. Even on top-performing foldables, the crease remains noticeable, though brands like OnePlus have made strides in minimizing its visibility. As we await the official release, it will be interesting to see how much progress Samsung has made in addressing the crease issue.
For consumers, this could mark a significant improvement in the usability and aesthetic appeal of foldable devices.
