Music around the world. I like the concept, I like a lot of what I heard on the iPhone app ($2.99), but half the time I spent poking around on the app, I wasn’t sure I really understood what I was listening to, or who and where it was coming from.
In Rio De Janeiro, I got to listen to “Sandy’s Theme” by Evelyn Evelyn and I loved it. Also in RDJ, someone had posted “Lovers’ Carvings” which I dug, but it took some computer research before I learned that “Lovers’ Carvings” was the title of a song by Stephen Wilkinson, better known as Bibio. In New York, I listened to a remix of “Southern Girl” by Erykah Badu, which was cool, but again, I had to do my own Googling to find out that it was Badu who wrote the song.
All of that being said, it’s not the fault of the iPhone app so much as SoundCloud (the site responsible for streaming the music) is to blame for not having a more uniform way to input music into their system. If SoundCloud did have a more organized method of uploading tunes, then it would be way easier to determine what you were listening to at any given time.
You could find your new favorite song, or a band whose record you would like to buy. As it is now, you find something you like and then you have to figure out if the information you’re being given is the band, the song, or maybe even the name of the album. It’s a real gamble.
