Lenovo leads global PC shipments in Q3

Lenovo Leads

Lenovo led the market for global PC shipments in the third quarter of 2024, shipping 16.5 million units and capturing a 24% market share. HP followed in second place with 13.6 million units shipped and a 19.7% market share. Dell Technologies took third place, shipping 9.8 million units for a 14.3% market share.

Asus showed strong growth, increasing its shipments to 5.5 million units, a 10% year-over-year increase, and capturing a 7.9% market share. This allowed Asus to outsell Apple for the first time in years, as Apple’s shipments dropped to 5.3 million units and its market share declined to 7.8%. Acer achieved moderate growth, with shipments rising to 4.5 million units, a 4.4% increase year-over-year, accounting for a 6.6% market share.

Despite signs of economic recovery, worldwide PC shipments dipped 2.4% year-over-year to 68.8 million units in Q3 2024. Factors such as rising costs and inventory replenishment led to a surge in shipments in the previous quarter, resulting in a slightly slower sales cycle.

“Demand has returned for PCs amongst consumers and commercial buyers,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers. “However, much of the demand was still concentrated at the entry-level thanks to a recovering economy and the back-to-school season in North America.”

New AI PCs from Qualcomm, Intel, AMD, and Apple are expected to drive demand in the premium segment in the coming months. Commercial demand outside the education sector also remained strong as many businesses have begun to refresh their PCs in preparation for the end of support for Windows 10.

Japan led this transition with double-digit growth in Q3 2024, and IDC expects other markets to follow suit in the coming quarters. However, IDC notes that the ramp-up towards the mass market for AI will take longer than expected, well into 2026.
