BeepStreet’s iSequence takes the complicated field of music sequencing (computer-generated and computer-managed) and boils it down to an app so simple that anyone with two thumbs can start composing songs within minutes.
It does this by simplifying a high-end sequencer down to its core components: five tracks that can hold one of 110 different possible sounds, three octaves to plot them on, and hiding nuts-and-bolts aspects like the music staff and messy wires. Instead, you see a handful of buttons and a keyboard to write on.
Once you lay down a melody or beat, it quickly becomes irresistible. You can even record at a slower tempo and speed it up later, making what’s impossible to play live sound easy.
The program is extremely iPhone friendly, letting you select a crop of notes by merely dragging your finger across them, though getting your timing down while recording isn’t yet perfect. That’s fine, though, because iSequence is meant to jot an idea down if you’re an experienced musician, or to experiment if you’re a newbie.
That you can export your music via Wi-Fi to other machines is all the more reason to stop procrastinating — become a rock star already.
