If you love music and trivia, A Day In Music History will be right up your alley. It’s an app celebrity gossip fans will also enjoy, but irregularities and bloopers make the value questionable.
First, the good: Where else can you learn when John Lennon last appeared on stage and when Kid Rock became engaged to Pamela Anderson?
Second, the bad: The depth of information is inconsistent over the course of history. The bulk of interesting tidbits are weighted to the second half of the 20th century, leaving the oldest trivia, well, trivial. How many people will glean enjoyment from learning composer Charles Francois Gounod was born on June 17, 1818? Meanwhile, post-2000 trivia is not included as often.
Another downside to the app is the number of grammatical errors. From missing letters in words to words being in the wrong order, it is clear the content was not proof read. At its worst, A Day In Music History, offered by MacPhun LLC, includes glaring mistakes, such as those on the Nov. 8 listing, which says “ere for Misc history for this day.”
A Day In Music History would benefit from hyperlinks to stories expanding on the facts it presents. While it’s encouraging that they offer frequent updates at no cost, the errors are annoying.
Still, for pop-culture buffs and Hollywood gossip gurus, A Day In Music History is probably worth a buck. Facts like John Lennon making his last stage appearance singing a duet with Elton John of “I Saw Her Standing There” at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 28, 1974, are fun to know. And someday, knowing that Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson were engaged on April 11, 2002, will come in handy.
