Runic Rampage – Angry Dwarfs Smash Everything

With a brief story asking you to obtain a variety of sacred artifacts to save your people, you embark on your grand journey of smashing the heads of monsters that guard your prize.

As you travel through the various lands, hunting for fragments of the artifacts, you will be beset with a myriad of enemies. At the start they’re tiny little goblins with spears, but as you progress, they multiply in number, then becoming orcs and eventually some kind of dragon… thing.

The damage and combat abilities of the enemy creatures continuously increase, making each level more dangerous than the last. The good thing, however, is the fact that you can level up as well, getting more points in strength, agility, speed and every other attribute you can think of.

The attributes directly affect your gameplay, making your swings better and you swifter. Those swings are pretty much the entire game mechanics; you can tap to hit or tap to jump forwards or combine them in a multitude of ways to gain new fighting combos. In the very first level, you’re given the instructions as to how to complete these illustrious combos, beating down a few easy enemies to do so.

Using just the two options of slapping an enemy silly and jumping forward like a kangaroo, you can do heavy attacks, jump attacks or even area of effect attacks. This is especially useful when you find yourself completely surrounded by a horde of incredibly angry dragons.[sc name=”quote” text=”This is especially useful when you find yourself completely surrounded by a horde of incredibly angry dragons.”]

Each level consists of an open canyon that you find yourself plopped into, with hordes of rather easy to murder monsters. The ease with which you can dispatch the hordes of monsters is merely a taste of the onslaught you’ll face later when beset by even more varying hordes.

As you progress through the levels you get the opportunity to crush even larger varieties of enemies, sometimes even blocky-looking humans, all in pursuit of those runic pieces to save your homeland.

Runic Ramage is ultimately a simple game, one of smashing the heck out of everything you see as you work towards the chest at the end of the level, defeating the larger than normal enemy there and then getting your prize.

The fighting itself is obviously a simplistic thing, smashing enemies as they come at you. However, the game’s decision to include a variety of combat combos, enabling you to decide whether to beat up one individual enemy or slash your hammer all around you. The variety of options you have available means that every fight is a series of hectic decisions, trying to figure out the most optimal move to beat the latest cluster of enemies around you.[sc name=”quote” text=”The variety of options you have available means that every fight is a series of hectic decisions, trying to figure out the most optimal move to beat the latest cluster of enemies around you.”]

Runic Ramage is a fighting game with the very best of choices for the player – at every moment, the game pleadingly asks you ”How do you want to kill this guy?”

The great thing is, there are so many ways to do it.

[review pros=”Great variety of combinations for beating up the enemy. Lots of different monsters and creatures to smash with your hammer. A really excellent fighting RPG.” cons=”The cost of weaponry and upgrades can feel too expensive. The continuous addition of new mechanics clutters the puzzles.” score=9]
