Free Apps for Diabetics: Restaurant Food Look Up Apps

Newer food apps are perfect for those times when diabetics want to dine out and not make a fuss while also not jeopardizing their health.

Just like everyone else, diabetics enjoy going out to dinner with friends. Depending on the level of sensitivity, most friend groups can work around the dietary needs of their friends. However, newer food apps are perfect for those times when diabetics want to dine out and not make a fuss while also not jeopardizing their health.

Here are a few of the ones that diabetics and those who love them should be aware of.

ShopWell: Healthy Diet and Grocery Food Scanner

Of all the food lookup apps we tried, my diabetic brother liked this one the best because you can personalize the app to fit your lifestyle. His thoughts: “I can add that I’m a Type1 diabetic, I’m an athlete, and all of that stuff is in my profile. It’s just a real good thing to have I think.”

The app is very easy to use. You just scan the barcode of food already in your home or at a grocery store. The ShopWell database with nutrition info has over 60,000 food items. According to the developers, this app is ideal for “discovering great food alternatives that better meet your needs while in the store or on the go.”

MyFitnessPal

MyFitnessPal is one of the most popular food and exercise tracking apps on the market. This can provide a huge payoff for diabetics looking to manage their dietary requirements by shoring up their efforts through community building. The app is free though you can take advantage of in-app purchases and a premium tier upgrade. Like many other food tracking apps, MyFitnessPal makes use of an effective bar code scanner using your smartphone.

This app can sync up with your fitness wear, too, including popular smartwatches such as FitBit.

Carb Counter: For Low Carb Diets

This is a great app, but it’s more for losing weight than for diabetes. It starts out asking your weight target weight and stuff like that. Overall, if you’re focused on losing weight, this is a good free app.

mySugr

Diabetes is absolutely no fun, of course, but the makers of this app took a lighthearted approach to help manage patients manage their daily routines. The mySugr app allows users to sync with the Apple Health app but also allows them to input food, meds, carb intake, and more. Upgrading to the premium tier allows users to track insulin dosage, injections, and more.
