New iPhone apps: Nextt, RoadWars, EPOCH.2

Get in touch with friends and create plans to do this week with our first app worth downloading today, Nextt. It’s a social network just for close friends, specifically geared at making plans easy on everyone. We’ve also got RoadWars, an app that analyzes how you drive to warn you when you’re not driving safely, and which lets you compete against friends to see who’s the best driver. Last but not least is cover shooter EPOCH.2, which continues the story of a robot dodging bullets and blasting fellow automatons.

Looking for even more social networking apps? Try these.

Nextt (Free)

What’s it about? Private social network Nextt is aimed at letting close friends coordinate to get together in the future.

What’s cool? Among the best uses for social networks is connecting and planning with your friends to actually do things with them in an offline capacity, but you don’t always want to make those plans in public and in front of everyone. Nextt is a social network specifically designed to be more private than Facebook and its ilk, providing users a quick and easy way to coordinate on possible meetups with only their closest friends. The app lets you discover and suggest things to do with friends, and focuses on the ability to set up an event that people can RSVP to and then attend.

Who’s it for? If you’re hoping to connect with friends but want to be free of noisy email chains and overcrowded social networks, try Nextt.

What’s it like? Other solid, small-scale apps for keeping up with others include Path and MessageMe.

There are many apps out there for learning how to drive. Get started here.

RoadWars (Free)

What’s it about? Become a better driver with RoadWars, an app designed to help get you in the habit of driving more safely by creating competition with friends.

What’s cool? RoadWars is kind of a game you play while driving. The app tracks your driving on certain roads, and analyzes when you stop too hard, accelerate too fast, or otherwise drive unsafely. It notifies you when you’re driving isn’t as safe as it could be, and rewards you with “coins” when you drive well. Driving safely allows you to “capture” roads as part of the game, and you and your friends can challenge one another on those roads to drive more safely – turning safe driving into a game, in which you compete with your pals.

Who’s it for? Anyone who could stand to drive more safely, but would also like to have some fun doing so, should check out RoadWars.

iWhat’s it like? More safe driving help is available in Drive Safe and Safe Driver.

EPOCH.2 ($2.99)

What’s it about? Dodge, roll, take cover and blast enemies in EPOCH.2, the sequel to the beautiful cover shooter about robots fighting robots.

What’s cool? Like the original EPOCH, players of EPOCH.2 have to be quick on their robotic feet. In each of the game’s levels, you’ll engage in gun battles with tons of different kinds of robot enemies, and the only way to stay alive is to effectively use cover, and to move quickly using swipe controls to dodge fire and retaliate. The game adds a number of new mechanics, like missiles you can use to blast bad guys (provided you’ve got the time to fire them). The game takes players through the story or humanity’s futuristic downfall, and includes some awesome graphics rendered in Unreal Engine 3.

Who’s it for? Fans of cover-based shooters and fast action will want to check out EPOCH.2.

What’s it like? Don’t forget to check out the original EPOCH, and grab another great cover-based shooter in Shadowgun.
