Unlike last week, which saw a handful of powerhouse releases, this week was chock full of new games to play. Topping the list is the latest Disney exploit, Monster’s Inc Run. As with Temple Run: Brave, they essentially hired a company to re-skin a pre-existing game, in this case Mega Run We’ve also got a cool pirate-themed first person game similar to Angry Birds, the latest from Triniti Interactive, a port of the original Metal Slug, and the long, long awaited release of Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition!
Monsters, Inc. Run ($0.99)
In celebration and anticipation of the upcoming 3D re-release of Monsters, Inc. to theaters, we get to enjoy the antics of Mike and Sulley in this colorful new runner. If the game looks familiar, it’s because it’s essentially a re-skin of Mega Run, courtesy of the original developer Get Set Games. If you hate nostalgia, you can also play as other random monster tag teams themed after the movie. The three worlds available to you are absolutely gorgeous, and the tried and true gameplay would fit well in any setting, but fits especially well in the wild world of Monsters, Inc. Check it out.
Potshot Pirates ($0.99)
First person Angry Birds isn’t exactly a new concept, but something about this game is just very appealing. As pirates, being the jerks that they are, you shoot at strange but innocent island inhabitants from the side of your ship while circling around the small islands. The 3D visuals are surprisingly good-looking, and production values are generally high across the 100 levels. Also, different power ups come in the form of crew-members that you literally strap to the cannon balls being shot. Naturally, instead of a Mighty Eagle, you can unleash the eye-patch wearing Kraken to obliterate stuff.
Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition ($9.99)
This absolutely legendary RPG of days long past has been revived and rejuvenated with upgraded visuals and content, courtesy of Overhaul Games. Now a whole new generation can enjoy the dark fantasy world that inspired so many games people love today, including Dragon Age. The only reason this isn’t the top game this week is because it’s iPad exclusive, and also requires an iPad 2 or above to play. However, this is easily one of the best games of all time, and if you have the means, it’s imperative you play it.
Call of Mini: Brawlers ($0.99)
You can always count on Triniti Interactive and their Call of Mini universe to deliver simple, repetitive fun in any genre, usually with a side order of zombies to slaughter. This game takes a Zombieville USA approach to gameplay, with you sidescrolling in a single lane, shooting, slashing, exploding, and bashing zombies on both sides of you. That classic Triniti art style is here, with more polish and cooler effects than ever. There’s really not much more to say. Download it now if you enjoy some nice, blood-soaked carnage from time to time.
Metal Slug 1 ($1.99)
Speaking of side-scrolling carnage, SNK Playmore had so much success with the mobile release of Metal Slug 3, they’ve decided to backtrack and give us the first game in the franchise. Even though “3” is pretty widely considered the best, this game is no slouch, with plenty of action to pack every level, alongside the exquisitely detailed pixel art. As with most of these old ports, the biggest problem will likely come in the adapted virtual controls, but they’ve always. Other new features like the Mission Mode and cooperative play via Bluetooth also make an appearance, so what are you waiting for?
