This week’s top iOS apps are headlined by an old social networking favorite that finally received a new coat of paint. Our other top apps include an updated TV Guide app, an app for the upcoming political conventions, an app for teaching science to kids and an app to assist you when you’re shopping for designer clothes.
Facebook update
It seems like it has been a while since Facebook actually refreshed their app. The fifth iteration doesn’t reinvent the mobile Facebook environment but it does feel immediately more user-friendly. It is faster and the way it presents newsfeed info that comes in while the user is already using the app feels much easier to digest. Viewing photos has also become easier thanks to an improved display layout. It still looks like Facebook, but it works much better than it did before.
TV Guide Mobile update
TV Guide Mobile also received a very nice update just in time for the fall TV season. The app revealed a complete visual overhaul with several new features. Users can create accounts that will save their favorite channels so they can be checked quickly, or just create a watchlist of their favorite shows so they’ll always know when they’re on. TV Guide Mobile now features a “trending” button that shows what other TV Guide Mobile users are checking out. Channels can now also be filtered by whether or not they’re HD.

Whether you’ll be following the Democratic or Republican party conventions on TV or in person, the CNN/TIME Convention Floor Pass will be a very helpful aid. The app features a constantly updating schedule of events and a guide for each convention city, along with a breaking news feed and political commentary from CNN and Time experts.
GazziliScience
If you’ve got a pre-schooler who needs to learn the ropes of basic science, GazziliScience will work its magic using colorful cartoons and a host of interactive games. The app features six science-focused activities that kids can complete to learn various science facts. GazziliScience also includes a hearing-impaired mode that shows text on the screen in addition to the app’s audio feed.
Gilt on the Go update
Gilt on the Go helps you purchase designer fashions at up to 60 percent off the suggested price. Gilt’s latest update now features bigger images so you’ll really know what you’re buying before you order it. If an item is sold out on Gilt, you can sign up for the Wait List which lets you know when it will be back in stock. Checkout speed has also been improved so you can buy what you want quicker than ever before.
