iPhone App Video Review: Mega Run – Redford’s Adventure

Rather than go with the more popular “endless” runner route, this title is divided into various levels. However, the layout of those levels are made up of interchangeable sections, so while each level has the same segments, they’re not always in the same order, and the power-ups that you’ll run into are also randomized. This keeps things fresh even as you replay levels again and again, but also makes it hard to learn from your mistakes and master particular levels. This is especially true when you add the three colored gems which you must collect for perfect completion to the mix.

As you play and earn stars on levels, you’ll also gain experience and level up, and save loads of money. As you level, you’ll unlock new power-ups and eventually just upgrades to those power-ups, as well as differently colored friends and family of Redford as playable characters. The power-ups include coin magnets, growth potions, fireballs, enemy freezing ice shots and much more. After a while, the objects in the store seem a bit brutally priced, but they’re unlocked slowly enough that you can just save up for them. If you are so inclined, you can purchase plenty of stuff in-app too.

The visuals are bright, colorful, and a feast for the eyes. They’re also nicely varied in the four currently available words. The music and sound is pretty great too, and everything puts a smile on your face. If you’re interested in perfect scores on each level, you’ll probably end up pretty frustrated. The randomness combined with repetitiveness can do that, but if you’re just interested in playing through the game and enjoying the journey, this is definitely a title to pick up. OpenFeint and Game Center leaderboards and achievements are also supported. This is a free, iOS Universal title, so definitely give it a look, at least.
