After 20 years, action-adventure benchmark Another World has found its way to iOS devices. It’s as great today as it was then (also just as difficult), and so has earned a place atop this weeks’ Best Games list. But we’ve also got four other awesome titles that are just as worthy of your consideration. If you’re looking for great games to pick up this week, keep reading.
Another World (iPhone, iPad) $4.99
A classic action-adventure title that is a landmark in gaming, Another World brings an old-school sci-fi gaming experience that gives you very little in the way of instruction or hints, and brings it into the modern era. Featuring amped-up graphics, a new set of difficulty modes (both easier and harder than the original), Game Center achievements and touch controls, this is a fully reworked version of Another World that feels great on the iPhone, yet maintains the experience older gamers will remember. Another World is an experience worth revisiting, or visiting for the first time if you never played the original.
Tiny Heroes (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
A painfully addictive tower defense title, Tiny Heroes puts players in a high-fantasy world, the kind we’re used to visiting in dungeon crawlers like the Diablo series. But instead of taking on the role of a hero fighting through a dungeon in search of treasure to loot and monsters to kill, you play the dungeon’s masterdefin and have to set traps, deploy monsters and basically do everything in your power to keep pesky heroes from stealing your treasure. With more than 50 challenging levels to play through and a ton of defenses to erect, Tiny Heroes is a tough game, and a tough game to put down. Tower defense fans will love this one.
Where’s My Water? (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Puzzlers that put a new spin on classic physics games are always a good time, and Where’s My Water? does a great job of re-purposing physics everyone recognizes – in this case, the movement of water – for some interesting puzzles. There’s only a few games that use water physics for puzzle solving, which makes Where’s My Water? feel fresh. Its premise is also great: you need to dig through the ground to draw water to the broken pipes of an alligator trying to take a shower. There are objects to find and get wet along the way to maximize your score, as well as weird things to avoid, like mold and toxic sludge. Where’s My Water? packs something like 80 levels too, so it’ll keep you busy for a while.
Monsters Ate My Condo (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Part match-three title, part Jenga game, part Godzilla movie, Monsters Ate My Condo is a fast-paced and refreshing arcade puzzler. Your job: try to match three or more colored condo floors on a tower to score points. You get those floors together by removing floors in between with a swipe, which will feed them to a pair of monsters currently ravaging the city. Feed the monsters floors that match their colors and they’ll be happy; feed them mismatched floors enough times and they’ll smash things. The goal is to make as many combos as possible, while keeping the monsters happy and generally not toppling your tower, for as long as possible. Monsters Ate My Condo moves really fast and is a fun and frantic time. It’s also visually hilarious, with some great designs used for the monsters.
Hector: Ep3 – Beyond Reasonable Doom (iPhone, iPad) $4.99
Finally, the thrilling conclusion of Telltale Games and Straandlooper’s point-and-click adventure game, Hector: Badge of Carnage. Last time on Hector, the British detective inspector of Clappers Wreake had fallen into a trap laid by a terrorist. That was after solving a number of puzzles and generally doing a bunch of detective work. This time, Hector has to escape certain doom – again – and then solve a bunch of puzzles by finding objects, combining them with other objects and talking to people throughout the town. Hector’s not for everybody, seeing as it’s a particularly raunchy, adult and kind of gross game, but it’s also often very funny and the right crowd will have a great time with it. Just be sure to check out Episode 1 and Episode 2 before embarking on the finale.
