Dramatic Black & White (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
Another in a sea of iOS photography apps, Dramatic Black & White is for all you old-timey photography fans out there. The app takes black and white photos, but that’s the simple part. Where it gets interesting is in adjusting your black-and-whites with the app’s various controls in order to highlight certain parts of the photo and lowlight others, to get the exact composition you want to achieve.
Dramatic Black & White includes a lot of different options for the kind of black and white photos you can achieve. You can choose brightness presets like infrared and various “dramatic” settings, or set your own by adjusting contrast, sharpness, tone, filters and grain.
Movie Night Out (iPhone, iPad) Free
Planning a night out and need to know what movies are showing? Pop open Movie Night Out and use the app to use Citysearch to find what movies are playing near and what their showtimes are. Movie Night Out makes it easy to plan your night, purchase tickets through Fandango, and even “check in” to your favorite theater when you arrive.
Movie Night Out also features a few extra handy elements. The app allows you to save movies to a “Must See List” and rank them, so the decision of what to see next time you go out is an easy one. It also allows you to watch trailers and read details on films, including reviews, and you can share films you see and recommendations with your friends on Facebook as well.
Star Legends (3D MMO) (iPhone, iPad) Free
From the makers of the mobile massively multiplayer online role-playing game Pocket Legends comes Star Legends, a similar title with a sci-fi flare. Star Legends has been beta testing on Android for a couple weeks now, but it just made the jump to iOS and will undoubtedly be filling with players, given the 3 million-strong community of its predecessor.
Players build sci-fi characters and take on missions, joining up with friends to clear space stations and secret laboratories of enemies while discovering the story behind weaving through the game. Star Legends has a lot of content and developers Spacetime Studios will likely be adding a lot more, if Pocket Legends is any indication.
NOM 5 (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
A bit of an endless running title with a twist, NOM 5 takes you through various side-scrolling worlds with only one control: tapping the screen. Your taps might be quick or long, drawn-out holds, but that simple move controls the fast-paced actions of NOM, a man traveling through space with an alien to meet the Spaceking to ask him to make NOM a girlfriend. Yeah, it’s a little weird – the point is, you’ll blast through lots of different, interesting levels, tapping away to defeat enemies and dodge obstacles.
Each level in NOM 5 is different, although they’re all created in a 2-D, side-scrolling style. Some have NOM running left to right and dodging objects as the world rotates around him; in others, he’ll swim or fly, bouncing off objects to redirect his momentum. The level design is pretty interesting for a 2-D side-scroller, and power-ups you can earn and equip along the way change the way the game plays.
