Bounce to the beat with Groove Coaster game

Music rhythm games might be going out of style, but don’t tell game publisher TAITO, because it’s just put out a new one in Groove Coaster. And it’s good!

The gameplay is simple: you have a little avatar that moves along a winding line, and need to tap anywhere on the screen when the avatar hits a prompt. That’s it! There’s really nothing more to it, really, but it is more complex than that would indicate.

The line twists and turns and the camera isn’t fixed. Yyour perspective changes regularly and sometimes so does the speed at which your avatar moves along the line. On top of all that, there’s a ton of bright, colorful explosions and whatnot all over the screen as you play, adding a visual component to the difficulty.

Even so, the game isn’t terribly difficult, and as far as I can tell you’re able to progress to a new song simply by completing one. You don’t have perform well to move on.

Of course, the point isn’t simply to progress through all the songs. As with all rhythm games, the point here is to get a high score. The most intriguing aspect of the game is one of the ways you can boost your score. You can tap the screen at certain intervals between prompts to trigger an extra beat in the music. Freestyling is a ton of fun.

All these positives wouldn’t matter much without quality music. I’m happy to report, though, that the original selections of techno music are generally quite good and sometimes outstanding. Also, the up-tempo tunes are very well-suited to the wild visuals.

Groove Coaster is an experience too colorful to pass up.
