While we’re checking out some cool new mobile games this week at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, we’ve got some hot apps to keep you busy. Worthwhile will help you find the best stories from your Twitter feed by aggregating links from the people you follow into an RSS feed, and Ultimate Groupon helps you stretch your money by letting you compare Groupon deals on a map. You can also sate your game hunger with Tecmo Bowl Throwback, a remake of the old football classic from the Nintendo Entertainment System, and Groovie Pig, a game that combines the rhythm genre with the endless runner genre.
Worthwhile (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
Twitter users are undoubtedly used to seeing a lot of links pop up on their Twitter timelines. Adding links to updates to share with friends and followers quickly is one of the coolest features of the social network, but all those blind links can be cumbersome, as well as a little overwhelming. Worthwhile makes all those links a little more organized by scouring through your Twitter feed, grabbing the links and making it easier to see what’s worth your time.
The app basically has the effect of turning your Twitter feed into an RSS feed. Stacked in the app is a list of all the links that have come through your timeline, with a snippet of what they offer. Worthwhile is also integrated in with Instapaper, so subscribers will be able to instantly send articles to their Instapaper Reading Lists to check out later.
Ultimate Groupon (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
Groupon allows its fans to save a lot of money with big, useful deals, and its accompanying app will even show where to go in order to use a coupon. Ultimate Groupon takes that idea one step further – it shows all the Groupon deals in a given area and puts them on a Google map with big icons, making it easy to find the best deals and compare them all before heading out.
Ultimate Groupon lets you see all the relevant stats and details on any deal on the map just by tapping on it. You can get all the information you need and pull the coupon up on your phone for use at the location. Best of all, though, is the ability to compare deals and pick the best one – and save the most money.
Tecmo Bowl Throwback (iPhone) $0.99
Back in the early days of video gaming was a game called Tecmo Bowl, a fun and difficult little game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It put two teams against each other on a 2-D football field oriented left to right, and was many a gamer’s first foray into competitive digital sports. Years later, the game has been remade as Tecmo Bowl Throwback, which captures the action of the original with updated graphics.
Tecmo Bowl Throwback lets players use one of 30 teams and includes three different game modes: Season, Playoffs and All-Star. It also uses multitouch controls rather than the standard virtual buttons one might expect, which brings a new feel to the old classic. Tecmo Bowl is currently on sale for just a buck, and it’s definitely worth checking out at that price.
Groovie Pig (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
Groovie Pig is another in the endless string of endless running games, in which the player controls a character running from left to right in a 2-D side-scroller, dodging obstacles along the way. The game stands apart, though, because of its solid art direction, multiple controls that require a lot of fast reactions, and intuitive soundtrack.
As you play through Groovie Pig, you’ll find the game reacting to your actions through sound. It’s as much a running game as it is a rhythm game, and you’ll need to hit the right buttons at the right time, with the help of musical cues, in order to stay alive. There are 10 different levels for players to work through in the game, as well as three difficulty levels for each.
