Please your inner pyro with Burn It All iPhone game

You’ve got 30 seconds and five pieces of various length of rope in front of you. Your goal? To burn the ropes in the correct order so they all finish burning before the timer runs out. And that’s just one of the easier levels of Burn It All – Journery to the Sun, an inventive fire-based puzzle app.

Later levels will have you burning bats that get in the way of the rope, and avoiding all sorts of other objects that threaten to douse the flame you’re controlling. You’ll also have to contend with special ropes that burn more slowly than the regular ropes and other ropes that burn faster than you could imagine.

The gameplay itself isn’t extremely difficult, but the inventiveness of the rope puzzles should keep gamers coming back for more. In some levels, the ropes are tangled up in labyrinthine mazes, and knowing which strand is the longest and needs to burn first can be the difference between completing a level and giving it another go. It’s really quite a bit of fun.

Visually, there’s not exactly a lot going on in Burn It All, but the flame graphics and the way the ropes burn both look fairly good. This app probably won’t win any fx awards, but it gets the job done.

Perhaps it’s a testament to how invested in the game I found myself, but my biggest complaint with Burn It All is that I feel like the flame should have a larger burn radius. I was surprised in the early going that a rope that was crossed over another rope I was burning would not catch fire unless the two ropes were knotted. I understand this is a quirk of the gameplay to make levels more difficult, but I really wanted my ingenuity to be rewarded.

Petty complaining aside, Burn It All is a fun puzzle game that warrants a look if you want something other than the overabundance of match-three puzzle apps available. Just don’t go burning down your home trying to play a real-life version of it.
