A great new head-scratching puzzle game has just hit the iPhone in the form of Smoody, which is named after the strange yet cute creatures the game is based around.
This is a great physics-based puzzle game with cutting mechanics, very similar to Cut the Rope, though entirely different at the same time.
Hear me out.
Your goal in each level is to help the smoodies reach the spinning black hole of doom at the end by destroying and reshaping the level as needed. The level design in this game is great, and the puzzles can be really clever. Some of the hoops you have to make the smoody jump through feel very much like a Rube-Goldberg machine. You have to cut various ropes and wood boards – usually with very precise timing and at very precise angles – to send the smoody through to the end.
You are rated on each level out of three stars based on how many cuts it takes you to complete the level. Striving to get three stars on each level just shows how creative a lot of the puzzles really are, and it can be immensely satisfying. There are four worlds with 80 levels total. The later levels really mix things up by introducing things like magnets and teleporters, and it stays a fresh experience throughout. Oftentimes it was a lot of fun to just go slice crazy on the screen just to see what happened.
The game also features OpenFeint leaderboards and achievements, as well as Facebook and Twitter integration. If you don’t want to take my word for it, there is a free version of the game called Smoody Lite, which I would definitely recommend trying if you’re on the fence. It features a handful of levels from all four worlds, and is an excellent showcase of the games variety and creativity.
This is a fantastic little puzzle game, and it’s only major flaw is that there isn’t more of it. At the low price it is being offered for, hurry up and give this one a download.
