You can now tap into your favorite brands on the iPhone. From a Juicy Fruit app “that’s gonna move ya” to new titles from the North Face and Glamour Magazine, here are some of the more recent household names that now exist as iPhone apps.
The North Face Trailhead (Free)
The North Face Trailhead app is an outdoorsy person’s dream come true. It offers a list of popular trips — whether you are walking, biking, skiing, etc. — near you and gives directions and a trail to follow for each. Each trip is uploaded by someone who has tried the trail themselves, so there is often a story — including personal anecdotes — about their experience, though sometimes it’s just a list of the routes taken. Either way, it’s entertaining and/or useful. Upload your own trips and choose from a plethora of activities like fly-fishing, snowshoeing, rock climbing and backpacking.
Glamour Magazine (Free)
This pre-World War II Condé Nast staple—Glamour has been around since 1939—has credibility not only due to its old age status, but also for its amazing fashion tips as well. You want to find bright sandals under $50? Glamour will give you myriad options; and now so to will the Glamour app — sort of. Open up to the cover of the current issue (you can view last month’s issue as well) and preview the pages inside. However, you can look, but you can’t touch. The pages aren’t clickable; you can just spy the headlines. If you’re sold, buy the issue to read in its entirety on your iPhone/iPod for just $3.99.
Juicy Fruit’s Sweet Talk (Free)
Juicy Fruit’s Sweet Talk app really threw me for a loop. Just as I was reminiscing about Juicy Fruit commercials in the 80’s— “The taste is gonna move you when you pop it in your mouth!”—and the berrylicious taste of the fruity gum, I was greeted by literal sweet talk, aka pickup lines. Want to know what DJ Spraytan would say if he was real and trying to hit on you? Choose from his “beehive” line or the one about “space moves.” DJ Spraytan not your type? How about Melrose, Double XL, or Mrs. Nextdoor?
Dazed and Confused (Free)
Almost too good to be true, the new Dazed & Confused app allows you complete access to the British fashion, arts, and culture magazine. From front to back, ads to editorial content, virtually flip through the pages of Dazed & Confused. The actual turning of the pages is a little slow going, but I suppose that’s to be expected when you think about how much content you’re plowing through. Some highlights for the current issue are interviews with Anthology Film Archives founder Jonas Mekas and supermodel/musician Karen Elson.
