App Industry Roundup: iPad goes global, Verizon customers want iPhones, Apple conference sells out

At long last, Apple’s iPad will be available in nine countries outside of the United States on May 28. Also, in today’s App Industry Roundup, we reveal why more than half of Verizon’s customers would ditch their current devices if they had access to the iPhone, and look ahead to Apple’s 2010 World Wide Developer Conference, which sold out in only eight days.

iPad to take over the world

iPad GPSPatient Apple enthusiasts in nine countries outside of the United States including Canada, Germany and the UK will finally be able to tap into the iPad on May 28. After previous delays associated with strong North American demand for Apple’s tablet computer, pre-orders for both the 3G and Wi-Fi models begin this Monday.

Additional countries that will have access to the next wave of iPad shipments include Australia, France, Italy, Japan, Spain, and Switzerland. It is expected that customers in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Singapore, New Zealand and Netherlands will get their hands on the iPad in July.

Of course, by the time Apple expands to markets outside of those named, North American customers will probably treated to a new generation of the device that may include features like a camera and telephone.

The results are in: Non-AT&T customers want their iPhones

Rarely does a day go by without a new rumor that says the iPhone will eventually be available on Verizon or other carriers outside of AT&T. This is for good reason.

recent survey by market research firm ChangeWave (PDF) shows that more than 50 percent of the Verizon customers queried would be “very likely” or “somewhat likely” to purchase an iPhone if it were available on their network. More than 40 percent of Sprint and T-Mobile customers also expressed their desires to purchase the iPhone if they didn’t have to change their cell plans.

The survey, which gauged opinions from more than 4,000 respondents, ultimately concluded that the “results show an unprecedented level of pent up demand for the iPhone among Verizon subscribers. If Verizon were ever to offer the iPhone, the evidence points to it having a profound and likely transformational impact on the industry.”
