The importance of HootSuite’s Android app

Professional Twitter client HootSuite has launched an Android version of its HootSuite app, joining the iPhone app the company already had. All the attention can’t be given to the Android app, however, as HootSuite also unveiled an updated version of the iPhone app, and announced its exclusive partnership with 140 Proof, the Twitter advertising network.

The Android app from HootSuite is significant, however, as it expands the company’s reach and validates the launching of multiple versions of a single mobile app.  As Google’s mobile platform, Android continues to gain market share, and offer itself as a viable alternative to the iTunes App Store.  With adoption for Android devices increasing, so too does the need to have a single mobile app on multiple mobile platforms.

The HootSuite app itself doesn’t differ much between the iPhone and Android devices, even across the free and premium versions (both $1.99).  Promoted as a professional Twitter tool, HootSuite has a clean interface for accessing the most important parts of your Twitter account, from followers to Lists.  As you can manage multiple Twitter accounts from HootSuite, its iPhone and Android apps are designed around accessing streams for each account you’ve registered with HootSuite.

Two of the more powerful features from HootSuite’s apps are the stats and search tools.  By doing a search, Twitter account managers are able to keep tabs on certain keywords, see where Twitter trends are going, and drill down into certain aspects of the Twitter community.

The “stats” category gives an even more filtered look at relevant Twitter activity, which is quite necessary for professionals using Twitter.  Brand organizations and individuals alike are beginning to show more interest in accessing and managing Twitter from their mobile devices, and apps such as HootSuite tend to provide the basics of what professionals need.

What’s equally as noteworthy regarding HootSuite’s Android launch is its extended reach to mobile users beyond the iPhone.  With a new deal from 140 Proof, HootSuite is clearly hoping to monetize its Twitter client.  140 Proof, still a very new company, has taken a somewhat controversial take on incorporating advertisements into tweets.  Ads from 140 Proof are displayed on Twitter streams for HootSuite users, and appear as a regular tweet would.  The tweets are fully functional, and can even be retweeted.  That’s the idea, isn’t it?

Between interactions with such ads and the increased targeting potential of mobile devices, 140 Proof is seeking out relationships with Twitter clients that have a wide reach.  Adding Android to the mix makes HootSuite an attractive partner for 140 Proof, as it is growing its accessibility to a wider range of mobile users.
