A single-engine plane crashed Saturday afternoon in a wooded area at Wright Brothers National Memorial’s First Flight Airport. The crash occurred at 5 p.m. as the airplane was trying to land at the airport. The airplane caught fire after the crash.
The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department, along with other local fire departments, extinguished the flames. The National Park Service said in a news release that multiple people died in the crash. The airport is closed until further notice.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration has also been notified.
As a result of the crash, the Wright Brothers National Memorial will be closed on Sunday. Photos posted in Outer Banks Facebook groups showed smoke visible for miles above the trees. This is a developing story.
