Flashlight shines, but is no substitute for real deal

When you download and use Flashlight, you might not understand it at first. Once you start the app, the screen goes white. You need to turn the lights off in order to see this cool, but not entirely effective, application work.

Flashlight is a simple app that uses your iPhone to produce a small amount of light. This effect is then used as a less-powerful substitute for a real flashlight.

A John Haney Software product, the app is definitely helpful if you find yourself in the dark with no other light source. You won’t be able to see across a dark room, but you should be able to find your keys if you drop them at night.

You’re also able to customize the color of the light the iPhone uses and play around with some special effects to create different types of light. The effects range from moving colored boxes to a split screen with changing colors. Getting to these options, however, isn’t intuitive, as you need to double-tap the screen.

In a situation where you need a little extra light to read or find something, Flashlight hits the mark as a utility tool. But, the light is not the brightest and can strain the battery if used for an extended amount of time. For this reason, I recommend having a real flashlight around and not use your phone as a substitute.
