Knot Guide could have made me a better Boy Scout. Even though I finished as a Life Scout and was moments from achieving Eagle status, the only knot I know how to tie can be found on my shoes.
Well, any former Scout, weekend camper or parent who wants to impress the kids will want Winkpass Creations’ Knot Guide. The app features 75 knots and more are added with each update. The knots are divided into 14 categories and alternate names are provided where appropriate. So if my square knot is your reef knot, we both end up at the same place.
Navigation of the Knot Guide is simple. You just choose from a category or search for a knot by name. You can also add any knot to a list of favorites, which is easily selectable from the menu screen. Once you pick a knot to tie, you’re taken to that knot’s screen. It features a short explanation of a knot’s purpose and when you tap “Tie the knot,” you get step-by-step instructions to tie anything from a Turk’s Head to a Rosendahl Loop.
The knot-tying instructions are color photographs of a blue and red rope with arrows showing what to do next. You can advance or go back through the instructions with a quick swipe of the finger.
The only downside to the Knot Guide app is that no text instructions accompany the photo illustrations of knot tying. Just a few words could help in some cases.
At $1.99, Knot Guide is a useful app for campers, mariners and, of course, scouts. This app won’t make you an Eagle Scout, but it’ll come in handy if you ever need to build a rope bridge.
