Sorting through MyMadrid iPhone app is no small feat

Many fans of Real Madrid will welcome MyMadrid with open arms (or feet, I guess, given that this is soccer). Unlike many team-specific iPhone apps, this one isn’t a lame template that is used for other teams – with only the news feed and colors being different.

Instead, MyMadrid was produced by the soccer team, for the soccer team. And while there are some quirks, they are overshadowed by the things the app does well.

The good news is the app is packed full of goodies. You get news, videos, live scoring, player info, pictures and more. It’s also easy to find your way through all this content, which is no small feat.

The biggest selling point of MyMadrid is the wealth of videos it boasts, and the diversity of them. I expected to see game highlights and player interviews, but was very pleased to see a good number of historical videos as well.

Not all of the features, unfortunately, are this good. The 3-D Goals section is one of the most curious of things I have seen in any app – fans are provided video-game style highlights of Real Madrid goals. Unfortunately, the graphics aren’t overwhelming and the soccer ball is ridiculously large, making the videos more comical than anything else.

Clearly, this isn’t a licensing issue as the app also includes actual game highlights. This leads me to believe the makers of the app just thought this would be a cool idea. Well, uhhh, it’s not.

The news section is also disappointing. There are no full articles or even links to full articles, but instead only pictures and blurbs. You can get most of the info you need through videos, but those looking for meaningful reading about the team will be bummed. Overall, the app sees to justify its $2.99 price tag.

MyMadrid won’t provide you everything Real Madrid’s fans need to follow the squad. But it does offer enough and it has to be considered one of the better team-specific sports apps.
