This week saw the release of Zombie Minesweeper, a game that does something awesome by mixing zombies with minefields. One part logic puzzler, one part zombie action game, Zombie Minesweeper is packed with explosions and a lot of fun. Read all about it and the four other games we most enjoyed below.
Zombie Minesweeper (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
A phenomenal re-imagining of the classic Windows game Minesweeper, Zombie Minesweeper works-in, as you might have guessed, zombies. In each level, you have to guide your character through a minefield using the old system. Some squares on the grid that represents the field have numbers, and those numbers tell you how many mines that square touches. Using logic, you need to puzzle out where the mines are and mark them. But you also have to dodge zombies along the way, who will actively shamble towards you and attack. Blowing up zombies by leading them over mines or tossing bombs at them earns you points. Zombie Minesweeper finds a great mix between logic puzzles and action gameplay, making this one a great buy.
Flick Soccer! (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
The simplicity of Flick Soccer! is what makes it so fun. The game is just about shooting soccer goals against a goalie, but since most of us don’t want to go kicking our iPhones around, you use your finger to kick the ball instead. Easy to learn but difficult to master, Flick Soccer! has five different game modes to play through, each requiring different strategies to beat them. Some are about hitting targets while avoiding the goalie, others require you to score as many points in a short period as possible. A great game for playing when you’ve only got a few minutes, Flick Soccer! challenges the player to become a skilled manipulators of a virtual soccer ball.
Mega Mall Story (iPhone, iPad) $3.99
Another in the “Story” series of simulations from Kairosoft Co., Mega Mall Story is just as addictive as its predecessors. The whole goal is to install stores and maintain them, and draw as many customers as possible to your store to raise its national rank among other malls. With each rank you increase, you can grow your mall, access new stores and generally make your building even better than it was. Like Game Dev Story and the other games in Kairosoft’s stable, Mega Mall Story is an easy game to waste hours on. There’s always something to do, and it’s simple enough that anyone can play but complex enough to keep you busy.
The Last Rocket (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
An 8-bit action puzzle game, The Last Rocket is brilliant and extremely easy to play. Touch the screen to prime your rocket to fire, and release to let it go. Then, swipe to change its direction, avoid deadly objects and collect gears in each of the game’s levels. The game gets more and more complex as time goes on, requiring quick reactions and some planning to make it through each stage, but The Last Rocket never feels frustrating and its puzzles never out of reach. The difficulty curve is pretty much perfect throughout, allowing players to have lots of fun with its various elements.
Rogue Sky (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
You play as a hot air balloon in side-scrolling action title Rogue Sky. You’ll fly through mazes of deadly clouds dodging mines and fighting off enemy balloons. You control your balloon with some easy-to-learn touch controls, which fire a pair of thrusters on your balloon: the left thruster pushes you to the right, the right to the left, and holding both sends you upward. Carefully dealing with momentum is the key to avoiding disaster, and Rogue Sky becomes fun when you have to mix a deft touch with tracking down and destroying enemy balloons. Each level has objects that need to be gathered to score points, and completing levels opens up new attributes for your balloons as well as new balloon types that you can take back through the stages you’ve already completed.
