Zombie Highway a sublime blend of ease, skill, violence

The best iPhone games are easy to learn, but hard to master – and Zombie Highway really nails this concept. Your car is set on a straight, lonely desert highway, and can be steered by tilting the iPhone left or right while holding it flipped sideways. Zombies stand on the sides of the highway, and when your car approaches, they launch themselves at it and latch onto the sides.

In order to kill the zombies and stop them from flipping your car, you need to steer toward various wrecked cars along the road. Basically, you’re scraping zombies off your car.

It’s a lot more difficult than it sounds. Steering is a careful gambit – overdo it, and you’ll careen into the wrecks, joining them and losing the game. Conversely, if you wait too long to get rid of the zombies, they’ll take you out. And some take more than one scraping hit to dislodge.

The simplicity of Zombie Highway makes it immediately addictive, and still very challenging. Scoring is based on distance traveled, and really, clearing two miles feels like a feat.

Zombie Highway has all the best aspects of an iPhone game. It’s quick and simple, very engaging, and a great way to kill boredom while in line at the bank.
