Yahoo! Axis is a new browsing and search experience from the company which shares all its features across your iPhone, iPad and desktop computer.
Upon launching the app, you’re greeted with a minimal black screen with a search bar up top. A handy tutorial is available so you know how to proceed, but really it’s pretty simple: start typing!
As you search, trending terms appear, and as you continue typing you’ll discover the search autocompletes to help you find what you’re looking for. In addition, a row of thumbnails appear as site previews, so you know where you’re visiting before you click through. This visual experience is far better on the iPad’s larger screen, but even rotating your iPhone or iPod Touch into landscape mode helps a bit.
There are a few notable features about Axis. The way your searches and results all appear on the same page is helpful, while Yahoo!’s “instant answers” are good for common searches like weather or movie times.
What sets Yahoo! Axis apart from its previous search offerings is how the app syncs effectively with your laptop or desktop computer. The app picks up wherever you leave off as you move from desktop to iPhone to iPad. Your recently visited sites, searches, saved articles and bookmarks are automatically accessible across all your devices. This is similar to the way the new Chrome Beta app works, but that’s only on Android right now. Admittedly, apps like Pocket and Instapaper offer similar functionality, albeit with web pages rather than searches.
There are Chrome, Firefox and Safari plug-ins so that Axis can sync with its iOS offering. A desktop search bar sits in the lower left corner of your browser screen at all times whether you are on or off the Yahoo! network, which some users may find a little obtrusive.
With easy access to your bookmarks on all your devices, a personalized home page, and handy visual previews of search results, Yahoo! Axis is a good way to keep yourself connected wherever you are.
