This week’s top apps are led off by an educational iPad app that should help young students struggling with their grammar get on the right track. If you’ve put down that SAT prep guide for good, there are plenty of other apps to enjoy this week too, including credit card rewards apps, weather apps and apps full of ideas!
Word Dynamo by Dictionary.com
Whether you’re a student struggling to ace your vocabulary homework or a concerned parent, Word Dynamo by Dictionary.com makes for a fun and intuitive teaching tool by turning vocab memorization into a fun game. The app has words for three different age ranges, from elementary school all the way to high school. You can play matching games, flashcard games, or listening games in the app, and once you’re tired of those you can even create your own games and word lists. Word Dynamo even has test prep for the SAT, GRE and ACT.
American Express
American Express customers should enjoy the latest update to their credit card’s flagship app. Now, not only can you pay your bill and check your balance like always, but you can sign-up for daily deals good all over the country. Discounts on cafes, boutiques and other businesses available only through the American Express app will give customers a leg-up on a fun discount.
StillShot
If you’ve ever taken a video of something you’d meant to shoot a simple picture of, you’re likely to find StillShot a big help. StillShot lets you break down the frames of the video you just shot and convert them into full resolution photographs. You can search for the perfect piece of video frame to memorialize in a picture and save it to your iPhone. The best part is, you won’t suffer any dropin the stellar resolution when you turn your video into a picture.
Weather Channel
The Weather Channel app had updated about as often as the actual weather channel, which is to say, not very much, so this first major redesign since 2009 is kind of a big deal. The app now lets users swipe between locations to view multiple forecasts, has a “Find Me Now” button to give you the local weather wherever you are, and detailed weather data. It has been redesigned for a more pleasing visual experience. The app has also added several new badges so users can figure out the forecast with as little hassle as possible.
Schemer
One of my absolute pet peeves is when people say they’re bored. In 2012, there’s simply no excuse for it. Schemer must feel the same way, because it’s an app that ensures you won’t be bored again. It lets you log different adventurous ideas in one place so that when the time comes and you think you have nothing to do, you can consult Schemer to see what ideas you cooked-up in the past. Schemer also suggests ideas based on the time of day or weather. Brunch fanatics who need someone to push them out the door on a Sunday morning will get a helpful heave from Schemer.
