You Don’t Know Jack is back, and the team behind the game, Jellyvision, has brought its signature snark and rapid pace to iOS. An unabashed fan of the original incarnation (yes, I mean 1995’s and its sequels), I won’t deny that I was excited to take on You Don’t Know Jack HD for iPad.
If you’re unfamiliar with YDKJ, it’s a fast-paced, general knowledge trivia game. Host Cookie Masterson takes you through a few rounds of (mostly) multiple choice questions — the faster you get the answer right, the more money you earn. Get it wrong, and you’ll lose your cash. Fans of the first YDKJ might be expecting the lengthy 21-question games, but that’s not the case in YDKJ HD. Instead, the app version offers an 11-question, three-round game. Although I was bummed that the episodes were short (I’m trivia greedy), the abbreviated format works well on iPad. In addition to multiple choice questions, YDKJ HD also offers DisorDat rounds (please add Gibberish Question!) and the classic Jack Attack final round, all of which use tapping to record your answers.
For now, users will only be able to play YDKJ as a single player — of course, Cookie’s narration is boisterous enough for your friends to help you out team-style, but what’s the fun when you can’t screw them? Even still, YDKJ is addictive. The questions in YDKJ HD are extremely current — maybe to a fault, but I only say that because I’m so incredibly sick of all things Rebecca Black. Jellyvision has said that updates and new features are in the works, and I hope, at minimum, that a two-player option and support for landscape mode are among them.
I don’t think you’ll be sorry to invest $5 in You Don’t Know Jack HD, but there is a free, two-round Lite version available to test if you have doubts.
