Vimeo’s new app for the iPhone looks like it just might give competitors YouTube and iMovie a run for their money.
The online video service offers access to Vimeo’s video library, but what really sets it apart from YouTube is the fact that this app allows you to record video and easily edit clips together. Users also have the option to add simple titles and text to the video, create transitions, and include a soundtrack.
For those who have shaky hands, there’s also focus control and grid alignment features that can help you to steady your shot while you’re filming.
The edited videos can be saved or uploaded directly to Vimeo’s website and can also be easily shared on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, WordPress, email, or via text message. If you come upon some other users’ videos in the Vimeo network that sound appealing, but you just don’t have the time to watch, you can queue them up and watch them later.
Vimeo seems like it is just as versatile as the premium video editing app iMovie. The key difference between those two services, though, is that Vimeo costs you nothing, while iMovie will set you back $5.
While your iPhone and iPad’s cameras and microphones aren’t quite comparable to the equipment used by, say documentary filmmakers and Hollywood studios, they do have pretty decent video and sound quality. If you ask me, everything you need to make a casual short film now rests in the palm of your hand.
Vimeo is compatible with the iPhone, fourth-generation iPod touch, and iPad 2 and requires iOS 4.0.1 or later. To upload video, users must first create their own Vimeo account.
