When I get a new sports app, I often find myself getting caught up in what new, flashy features it does or does not offer. The problem with this is that finding solid, pertinent information often gets put on the back burner, and – as much as I hate to admit it – sometimes something as simple as a game’s start time or directions to the stadium are all you need.
Unlike many sports apps, Kentucky Basketball GameDayApp appears to be more concerned with providing information than providing entertainment. It gives you fast facts about the team’s history and Rupp arena instead of a video or audio section.
That’s not to say it doesn’t have things to help Wildcat fans pass the time. The app has a news feed from, CBS College Sports as well as a Twitter feed – though I have to mention they let more than a few football players’ feeds slip in.
But for the most part, Kentucky Basketball GameDayApp will be useful when you have a question regarding the team, not when you’re looking to play on your phone. The app is essentially a schedule that includes past results (no stats section, though), and lots and lots of links.
As for the links, that’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine and my main complaint with the app. Just about everything opens in Safari, so if you want to check out multiple news stories. or even the team roster, you’ll have to switch between the app and Safari multiple times. It’s an incredibly frustrating design that will annoy even the most avid Wildcat fans.
This is made worse by the price of the app – $2.99. It is made by a small company, Singing Bridge, and includes no advertisements, so while I’m not overly offended or shocked by that price, I’d like to get a little more than a bunch of links that open in Safari.
Now that I got that out of the way, Kentucky Basketball GameDayApp does have some nice information and it is undeniably convenient. It’s one of the few apps dedicated entirely to Kentucky Wildcat basketball and most would agree that it is the best.
So while fans of the team will get their $3 worth, those of you just looking for a cool sports app should not bother. This app is good enough to please its target audience, but that’s it.
