It’s hard to find anything to complain about when it comes to the New Orleans Saints’ 2009 season. Given that the team has won its first eight games, there’s literally no way it could be going any better.
You can’t say the same thing about the team’s latest app, WhoDatApp, though. While it’s far and away the best option for Saints fans — this isn’t a template app and it’s not short on content — it still leaves a little to be desired.
WhoDatApp is pretty standard when it comes to team-specific apps. It’s got a schedule (with results that link to ESPN), rosters (with bios that link to the team’s Web site) and Twitter feeds from players, as well as media members who follow the team.
The app even has a few interesting wrinkles. It has a message board section, courtesy of WhoDatZone, and it includes an audio section that has postgame commentary and news conferences, as well clips from WWL 870 AM’s drive time show with former Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert.
It’s not a fantastic looking app, but it’s not ugly by any means. It’s got a simple design and most of the links open within the app and are properly scaled, so you don’t have to zoom in to read the pages.
So what’s there to complain about? Well, there would be nothing negative to say about WhoDatApp if it was a free download, or even if it cost 99 cents. But the app is priced at $2.99, and it simply doesn’t compare to similarly-priced apps.
For $3, you would hope to get live scoring or video highlights, but neither is included. Also, the radio show’s audio isn’t streamed live, though it does seem to be updated daily.
Saints fans will probably still enjoy the app, but it doesn’t hold up against others such as MyMadrid or Notre Dame Central, and when you price an app like this, those are the apps it will be compared to, not the generic template ones.
