The ability to set reminders on your iPhone calendar already exists, so how many people need an app that does exactly that, albeit in a slightly more attractive package? It turns out, more than you’d think, as long as you’re working on more serious projects.
For short-term reminders, there’s simply no reason to use Weave over your regular Calendar app. Scheduling on Weave looks a lot like scheduling anywhere else. You can set the length of time for your activity, as well as a lengthy description of the activity. Using this to note that you have to take the dog to the vet next week would be a waste of an app.
Where Weave comes in handy is its ability to integrate income and expenses into longer-term projects. You can set to-do lists, and then centralize them all into one major project. So, for instance, if you were building a house, you could note that your to-do list for the day involves buying lumber and cutting it. From there, you could also put in the expense that the lumber was going to cost you. And all of that would be listed under the larger umbrella of the house you were building.
In that respect, Weave might find its biggest clientele among contractors or people with day-to-day tasks that are always part of a larger project. The average person’s shopping list doesn’t really apply here. Unless you’re making a large dinner at the end of the week, I suppose.
As to its unnecessary features, for reasons I don’t understand, you have to register to use Weave. They promise not to send you any spam (and they haven’t sent me anything at all in a week), but I’m not sure why you should have to register your personal scheduler. As far as I can tell, you can’t check the task lists you make anywhere else. That makes the registration portion of this app a waste of time.
Basically, if you’re just trying to keep track of a few small details of your life, there are much simpler ways to do so than using Weave. If, however, you’re mired in some large projects that you want to keep expense reports on as you go, Weave might be what you’re looking for.
