This week sees the release of the latest title from Telltale Games, another point-and-click adventure game with a big-time pop-culture license. This time around, it’s the popular graphic novel The Walking Dead, and the game packs plenty of great writing, zombie mayhem, and fantastic visuals. Walking Dead: The Game (iPhone, iPad) $4.99
The latest from Telltale Games, the makers of Back to the Future and Jurassic Park, is among one of their best. This zombie title, based on Robert Kirkman’s well-loved graphic novel (but not the TV show), is certainly not for kids, but its adult themes, tight writing and interesting gameplay make it a must-play title. Walking Dead is a point-and-click adventure where story is king, puzzles have to be solved, and reflexes aren’t as big an element, until suddenly they are when you come under zombie attack. But more important are the choices you make in how you deal with other survivors, because those people will remember throughout the course of the next four episodes of the game.
Great Big War Game (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
Cutesy 3-D graphics give a cheerful aesthetic to the turn-based strategy on offer in Great Big War Game. The title has players using various classes of soldiers – like snipers, engineers and bazooka teams – to fight off enemy troops. Great Big War Games packs 50 great missions, plus pass-and-play multiplayer, which means you can play along with your friends as well as by yourself. The Dark Knight Rises (iPhone, iPad) $6.99
Gameloft’s tie-in with the summer’s biggest movie is also one of the bigger games in the iTunes App Store. Clocking in at almost 2GB of space, that’s a huge amount of console-level content. Players take on the role of Batman and fight off thugs, glide between buildings and pursue Bane through the same storyline as the film. The title feels akin to games available on much bigger systems, and it packs quite a graphical punch, to boot.
Radia (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Where The Dark Knight Rises has some extremely high-level visuals, Radia opts for some much simpler ones. This tilt-based arcade title is still pretty beautiful, though. You control a ring of light that you need to move around various levels by tilting, snagging other balls of light to score points while dodging deadly saws. It’s a pretty simple concept, and yet Radia is a challenge of careful control and fast reflexes. Each level throws something new in your path, and the whole thing is timed. It packs tons of challenging levels and three modes of play to give you plenty of challenge.
Synesthetic (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
Rhythm and psychedelic visuals mix to create Synesthetic, a simple tilt-based title in which players take a first-person perspective and fly at a high rate of speed along cables. The cable is a round surface, meaning as you tilt left and right, you rotate around it. You’ll need to rotate as you move in order to avoid various structures that stand in your way. The cool part is that each level is generated based on the music taken from your device. That means you play your own songs each time you fire up Synesthetic, providing new challenges tailored to your tastes.
