Have you heard of Posterous.com? If you haven’t, you will soon.
The latest in the wave of microblogging systems (think Tumblr, but better), Posterous allows users to email anything they want posted. No fussing over rotating images, HTML-ing links or converting video necessary—Posterous does it for you. Posterous already supported TwitPic integration, but now the site has rolled out its own iPhone app, PicPosterous.
PicPosterous is designed to replace the iPhone’s built-in camera function. Launch the app, take a photo, name your album and you’re done. PicPosterous instantly uploads your photo to a custom domain name at posterous.com. Don’t have a Posterous.com account? That’s OK. You don’t need one. Posterous will auto-create a URL for your photos and video, which will be displayed at the bottom of the app screen. If you decide to register for Posterous, you can merge your iPhone account with your custom domain.
You can also upload library photos through PicPosterous, but for me, PicPosterous’s draw is its immediacy. The lag between taking my test photo on my iPhone and accessing it on my laptop was mere seconds. For breaking news, I don’t know of a faster way to get photo or video onto the Internet, a big plus for citizen and professional journalists alike.
For a first incarnation (it’s been out less than a month) PicPosterous is a good app. Captions are not yet supported, but a text feature and auto-post control are slated to roll out in the first update. If developers also include a way to delete single images—right now “delete” removes your entire album, so be careful—PicPosterous will be worthy of my highest rating.
