Unscramble your vocabulary with Hooked on Words

When I think of a word jumble, fast-paced isn’t generally the first thing that pops in my mind. But Hooked on Words has me changing my tune.

What makes Hooked on Words unique are its four very different game modes. The “Standard Mode” is like playing a regular old word jumble or Boggle game. Players can slide their fingers across the letters on the board to form words in any direction. When a word is formed the letters fall off the board, enabling new letters to drop down until there are no more available words on the board. This is an ideal game to play for people who have some serious time to kill.

The other three modes are more time intensive. “Timed Mode” offers up unlimited letters but only two minutes to play. Similar to this, “Scramble Mode” also only offers a two-minute game, but this time the tiles don’t change and the player has to come up with as many words as they can with the same set of letters.

And then there’s “Collapse Mode,” my favorite mode in the game, and easily the most frantic. As players form words, a timer ticks down. When the timer expires, a row is added to the game board. If even a single column fills up with letters, the game is over. Collapse becomes a race to make words in the rows that are quickly filling up so that you can keep playing. I won’t say playing a word scramble is exactly exhilarating, but “Collapse Mode” comes close to the feeling.

Each of these very different options requires different strategies to score big, and all of them are enjoyable in their own right. Unlike games like Hanging With Friends or Words With Friends, which are limited by their format or the strength of the opposition, there’s a much greater feeling of variety in Hooked on Words.

It’s extremely refreshing to find that the multifaceted jumble app can be played at any speed on the dial. No matter whether you’re feeling competitive or just contemplative, Hooked on Words is worth checking out.
