Although Twitpic is my go-to photo service of choice for Twitter, the new app for iPhone and iPod Touch doesn’t meet the mark when it comes to a stand-alone app.
There isn’t anything complicated about Twitpic—connect your Twitter account and you’ll see options to view popular photos, photos from your friends and through the user icon, your own photo stream. I suppose Twitpic’s best feature is its integrated camera, which offers an editing panel with cropping, orientation options, a brightness meter, enhancements such as backlighting, night and balance and 10 effects. I did like the sheer number of options, but I didn’t like that there was no undo function. If you decide you don’t like an effect after you’ve hit apply, you’ll need to start from scratch.
Images can be viewed almost full screen, but I didn’t like that the toolbars popped up upon each image load. This displays the tweet associated with the image and the number of views and comments. Although the bar can be reviewed with a tap, the initial display was too quick to fully take in all the information and made for a distracting experience. Another thing I learned from testing the Twitpic app is how few friends of mine are actually using the service. My in-app timeline was thin to the point that it’s not even worth a tap to view.
Ultimately, Twitpic feels too late on the scene to make a mark. Existing users like me who care not for filters will likely stick to tweeting photos through our Twitter clients of choice. And for those tweeters who spend time photo editing, Instagram and the like are already filling the top slots.
