Twisted Metal maker, console developer Eat Sleep Play switching to iOS games

Console game developer Eat Sleep Play is about to release a new edition to the hit game series Twisted Metal, but the company might be looking to a future on devices with smaller screens.

In an interview with the Salt Lake Tribune, the company’s co-founder, Scott Campbell, stated that the developer is looking at Apple’s iOS devices as possible launching pads for new projects. Here’s a quote from the Trib’s story:

“‘It’s a platform that is in our pockets almost 24/7. It’s kind of the size and types of games we’re playing,” said the company’s co-founder, Scott Campbell. ‘You can certainly reach a lot more people. That’s pretty exciting for us.’

“As for the types of mobile games Eat Sleep Play expects to make, Campbell said, ‘Hopefully it’s our brand of mechanics-driven gaming brought to these devices.’”

But as TouchArcade notes, just what’s going to happen with Eat Sleep Play is a point of contention at best. The studio downsized eight employees last week to bring its studio down to 26, presumably in preparation for the transition from console game maker to mobile-making studio. The studio’s other co-founder, David Jaffe, the well-known creator of the God of War franchise, is also expected to leave ahead of the transition. But Jaffe hasn’t been too forthcoming with definitive plans.

Jaffe released some public statements on his Twitter feed, noting that the company doesn’t know exactly where it’s going after its latest project hits store shelves. Jaffe has said he plans to open a game studio in San Diego, but just what it will make – be it casual titles, as some have suggested, or something else – is still not known. A fairly famous force in the video game world, where Jaffe lands will definitely be notable, although the developer said he has no plans to make titles like FarmVille or Angry Birds; but he hasn’t taken iOS development off the table.

Regardless of where Jaffe ends up, however, Eat Sleep Play seems to be aimed at mobile and that could be a very interesting transition with a lot to offer iOS gamers. The developer’s Twisted Metal title, the tenth in the series, hits shelves on Feb. 14. It features vehicle combat and a dark storyline; how it fares after its release could bode very well for Eat Sleep Play’s future game offerings.
