Fans of Twitter have in the UberSocial iPhone app (free) a great tool to not only manager personal Twitter accounts, but also to follow those of favorite public figures.
You do not have to have a Twitter account to use the app, which made for a great start. The main page of the app can be viewed in tab or grid format. The tab format is the best. Across the top of the screen are categories, including “Entertainers,” “News,” “Politics” and “Sports.”
On the left is a scrolling column of twitterers. Tap on one, and on the right is a scrolling column of corresponding tweets from the account.
If you want to browse tweets from the White House, for example, select the “Politics” category, and then scroll down to find President Obama’s account, or the White House account.
The app, like Twitter itself, is heavy on the celebrities and pseudo-celebrities. So brace yourself for lots of Justin Bieber ramblings and Kim Kardashian cleavage.
If you want to get in on the national conversation, you can search for tweets by trend. When I was testing the app, it was all about Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Jared Loughner.
In addition, tweets can be browsed by subject or person. If you are a die-hard Chicago Bears fan, for example, you can search for all related tweets. Or if you’re curious to know what people are tweeting about Brad Pitt, you can search that, too.
If you would like to send out your own tweet, you can access your Twitter account via the app.
