Tweetbot pushes app innovation envelope

With mobile apps, no developer – not even Twitter – can rest on its laurels. While the world was not clamoring for yet another Twitter client, the just released iPhone app Tweetbot may give the micro-blogging mothership a run for its money.

I know, I thought the same thing. Another Twitter client to add to the hundreds already available? Really?

But there is something about the app’s icon and tag-line that drew me in. “Tweetbot – A Twitter client with personality.” Now, as MG Siegler of TechCrunch pointed out earlier today, we are in the post-client era for Twitter — by long shot I might add. Yet, the guys over at Tapbots did Twitter users everywhere right by this one. In the midst of Tweetdeck, Echofon, Osfoora, Seesmic, Hootsuite, and others, the Twitter client by Twitter.com was always my go-to Twitter app. But it can’t hold a candle to Tweetbot.

I would describe Tweetbot as a Twitter client that does everything better. It does not do anything new, just better.

When you have innovation with emulation, a new desired product is born. In a culture that is inundated with content, much of it garbage, the ones who create excellence are the ones who will last. There is really no better example of this than in the wide world of Apps. There are more than 350,000 iOS app available and on January 22, 2011 the 10 billionth app was downloaded. The consumer base for this market is so big and users know what they like. People gravitate toward great. That app that slides just right, or has the perfect mix of whit and grace in the description, or shades everything to perfection, will rise to the top.

As you are browsing your selection for apps in the future, don’t stop demanding the best out of the selection. It’s so important for these development teams to desire the best because as we become more saturated with content, similar mediocre offerings will fade to gray. You will have to be set a part and teams like Tapbot will win out.
