Tribune app-ropriate for Chicagoans

As far as news apps for major newspapers go, the Chicago Tribune app ($1.99) is rather simple. Nevertheless, it serves its purpose – delivering the latest headlines in a concise and readable format.

The main screen includes a vertical scrolling list of news stories, with headlines only, except for the top stories, which also include a nut graph.

Select a headline, and a complete story pops up. Scrolling from top to bottom is easy, and bylines are included, unlike in some other news-related apps. Bylines are linked to email addresses, so you can send the reporter a quick note if you are so compelled.

To move from section to section, swipe left. You will pass similarly designed screens for business, sports, entertainment, etc.

If you want to move a bit quicker, swipe to the right. There are also more than a dozen current photo galleries, easy to browse. And be sure to check out the TribTweet section, where you can read the latest tweets from Trib staffers.

If you want to return to a particular item later on, you can save it.

All in all, this is a great news app, aesthetically pleasing with plenty of solid content.
