As 2010 is almost one-third over, this is as good a time as any to reflect on the year that has been in iPhone gaming.
We’ve already seen some great sequels, ports from other gaming systems and, of course, tons of zombie games. We’ve also seen the quality of games improve, and that is nothing but good news for the rest of the year.
I’ll save ranking them for a later time, so the iPhone games will be presented in alphabetical order.
Assassin’s Creed II Discovery
(99 cents) in my weekly game column, I did so almost in passing and with the requisite snarky zombie game comment. A few weeks later, the Gamedoctors’ release is the top paid iPhone game in the iTunes App Store. Who knew?
It’s easy to see the appeal of ZombieSmash – the graphics are stylish and it’s a blend of two very popular genres — tower defense and flick games. You play the role of a sole survivor in a town full of zombies and, with the help of weapons such as asteroids, wrecking balls and liquid nitrogen, you must survive for 31 days.
Is it cliché? Yes, but it also qualifies as one of the better games so far this year.
