There’s really no way to sugarcoat this. Today Recipes (free) is one of the worst iPhone apps I’ve used to date. Designed for NBC’s Today Show, the Today Recipes iPhone app is supposed to provide an easy way to access the Today Show’s “Cooking School” video segments, its recipes and ingredients.
But, ultimately, Today Recipes is a failure. The iPhone app claims to update hourly, but I had trouble locating the top stories from the Today Show’s Web site in the app. The app’s front page offers “Today’s features,” which includes a seemingly random selection of food and wine news, mixed with video links of cooking segments. I didn’t have trouble streaming the video, but there is no way to easily access the featured recipe to add to your recipe box or shopping list. This is also the only place you can access videos.
Search results appear to display in a random order and although the app does auto-correct if you misspell a Guy Fieri’s haluski, you won’t get any results. There’s also no way to find out when a particular dish aired. The search bar doesn’t automatically clear and there’s no quick delete; a small, but extremely annoying oversight. Most of the app’s pages also have ads, which take up a fair amount of screen space.
I’m sure that the Today Show has featured some great recipes during its cooking segments, but good luck finding them with this app.
