Time magazine thinks “everyone loves a good list,” so to capitalize on the obsession the magazine has launched TIME Populist for iPad, an app jam-packed with entertainment-focused lists.
The free Populist is made up of hundreds of lists in the categories of movies, books, music, television and games. After selecting a list, you’ll see thumbnails of all the included picks so you can get an overview. Tapping on an image will present you with a synopsis, cast and character info and the ability to add the title to your own lists for reference. Populist includes sharing options, support for Disqus comments, most interesting, the option to vote if the pick should be “obviously” included on the list or “definitely not.” It’s not clear if this voting will affect the lists in the future, but it’s interesting to see how TIME’s picks measure up to popular opinion.
TIME Populist is also designed to promote commerce. Each pick includes buying links — music from Amazon or iTunes; books from Amazon, iTunes or Barnes & Noble, and movies from Amazon, iTunes or watching via Netflix for those subscribers. Some movies also offer built-in clips.
TIME Populist is worth a look. The app will be updated weekly, so even though some categories are a bit light on content currently (video games, mostly), there should be additions in the near future.
