Time Out iPhone apps worth a look for city tips

Time Out—in all its incarnations—has been the preeminent authority on what to do (and when) for more than 40 years in London, more than 15 in New York City and more than five in Chicago. Although each magazine is now published autonomously (especially since TONY gave up its stake in the Chicago edition in March) Time Out founder Tony Elliott’s influence can still be seen, both in print and in the mobile versions. Currently, four apps serve the brand in the iTunes’ App Store, but as I don’t speak Russian, I only examined the big three: Time Out London, Time Out Chicago for iPhone and, the original, Time Out London.

I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that TOC’s similarity to TONY was a cost-saving measure, as the two magazines were under the same umbrella at the time. Now that TOC is standing on its own, president and editor-in-chief Frank Sennett, et al., might want to consider a re-conception or, at the least, a price reduction. I’m confident the Windy City edition can do better.
