Now that we are into the school year, it’s time to start freaking out about whether our kids are doing well. For iPhone and iPod touch users, there are a number of apps that can provide an extra boost to what’s being taught in the classroom.
Both my kids take a language—the 7th grader is taking Spanish for the first time, and the high school freshman is into her third year of French. I’ve got 24/7 Tutor’s Free Spanish Tutor and Free French Tutor apps on my iPhone. Each provides lessons in five categories, such as home, basic phrases and questions. For each category, a study list of phrases and quizzes (multiple choice, puzzle, and a flash card option) is provided.
For social studies and history classes, useful apps include US States and Capitals, Atlas – Pocket World Maps, and the World Factbook.
Taking chemistry or listening to the whining of one who is? Pick up The Chemical Touch, a tapable table of elements. Biology students can grab the Oxford Dictionary of Biology, but at $14.99, you’d best be hoping to become a doctor. Garden-variety biology students will appreciate AA+ Biology Study Cards for simple review of concepts before an exam.
You don’t have to be an astronomy student to love Pocket Universe: Virtual Sky Astronomer. This handy app will help anyone figure out what they’re peering at in the night sky.
Younger students, or those needing review, will find Math Flash Cards helpful. Meanwhile, Mathemagics-Mental Math Tricks lets the player have fun while enhancing their ability to do math problems in their head.
For building the vocabulary, AccelaStudy offers several builders—a Lite version and versions specific to preparing for GRE, GMAT, SAT, ACT and TOEFL tests.
If you’re having troubles with art history, grab Art. You’ll have a catalog of major artists and their works, biographies and facts at your fingertips.
