In February of last year, The Daily, a new magazine designed just for the iPad with lots of digital features, was released to user and critical acclaim. The app offers a mix of headlines, videos and reports on seven topics including news, business, gossip, opinion, arts and life, apps and games, and sports. It’s glossy, slick, full of graphics and very 21st century. As of today, it’s available for iPhone users, too. The Daily for iPhone has all the same features as The Daily on iPad, but formatted for a great reading experience on the small screen.
Both formats of The Daily are free to download and serve a limited selection of free stories. For $1.99/month or $19.99/year you get access to a new edition every day with, according to the folks at Daily Holdings, at least 100 stories. There is in-app commenting, excellent photojournalism, including some amazing 360 degree pics, and Facebook and Twitter integration. One subscription works on both iPad and iPhone.
While some of the reporting can be a tad lightweight, The Daily also has articles from some excellent and well-known journalists and gossip gurus, and the iOS integration is without equal.
The new iPhone version works in portrait orientation and looks as sharp on an iPhone 4 as the newly Retina-optimized iPad version does on the third-generation iPad. Scalable fonts make the reading experience on the small screen easy, and navigation is as simple as swiping down for stories within a section and side-to-side to switch between sections.
The Daily reinvented the digital tablet magazine and now The Daily for iPhone is doing the same for smartphones. Today’s issue is completely free, so be sure to check it out.
