With the economy circling the drain, it’s getting harder and harder to justify shelling out $20 for a pair of movie tickets and the obligatory bucket of popcorn doused in butter-like sauce. Fortunately, until they come out on Netflix or you get the DVDs as presents for whatever gift-giving holiday you might celebrate, movie-inspired games for the iPhone will help tide you over and help add shelf life to the cinematic experience.
Pop-culture DVD-trivia game “Scene It?” hops on the inescapable “Twilight” bandwagon with the aptly named2012: Apocalypse ($1.99) has more in common with 1986 arcade game “Rampage” than the movie it shares a name with, letting you control a firestorm, earthquake, or other forces of nature to demolish nameless cities. With no obstacles other than the time limit, there’s little in the game to actually stop your wave of destruction on humanity and its many shiny buildings. It’s all right as far as movie games go, and works well as a serviceable distraction, but $1.99 is a lot easier to swallow for a cheap thrill than heading to the theater.
