The Bard’s Tale leads iPhone Games of the Week

This week’s leading iPhone game had its day in the sun as a PC and console title way back in 2004, and now it’s back for fans in iOS form. The game is largely hilarious and loves to pick apart video game conventions, making it a great offering for avid gamers. But it’s not the only excellent title to come out this week. Keep reading for four more selections you should definitely check out.

The Bard’s Tale (iPhone, iPad) $5.99

A port of the PC game of the same name from a few years back, The Bard’s Tale is a fun top-down role-playing game, but its real power is in being hilarious. The game is filled with snarky writing and is a fan favorite because of it. Fighting through the game’s 3-D environments is done by summoning characters to help you with music, so you’ll get a fair amount of fantasy gameplay out of The Bard’s Tale. It also packs some great voice acting talent in Cary Elwes from The Princess Bride, and includes 14 hours of voiced dialog when taken together. Lots of content and lots of hilarity make The Bard’s Tale a great purchase.

Inertia: Escape Velocity (iPhone, iPad) $1.99

Side-scrolling platformer Inertia: Escape Velocity sets itself apart with a very cool feature: the ability to manipulate gravity. As you move around the game’s levels, you can jump over obstacles and from platform to platform, or leap, run and bound in various directions and switch off gravity to let your inertia drag you through the air to places you otherwise couldn’t reach. The game’s levels require you to think almost like a pinball, bouncing off walls using your inertia until you get to where you need to be. It’s an interesting take on the puzzle-platformer and a lot of fun.

Batman Arkham City Lockdown (iPhone, iPad) $5.99

Batman: Arkham City is a huge game for Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3 players, and now iOS players get a piece of the action with Arkham City Lockdown. It’s a little bit like the Infinity Blade series, pitting Batman (that’s you) against enemies in a series of one-on-one fist-fights. You’ll use touch controls to dodge and deflect enemy attacks, then swipe away to throw punch combos to take them down. You also get access to a bunch of cool Batman gadgets that you can unlock over time, and the app is packed with cool extras like comics. Probably best of all is that Arkham City Lockdown looks great, and captures the feel (and a bit of the story) of its console counterpart.

Six-Guns (iPhone, iPad) Free

Take on the Wild West in Six-Guns, a game that puts you in the shoes of a wandering gunslinger set on defending the innocent and shooting a whole bunch of bandits. Six-Guns takes you through 40 different missions across a huge portion of the West, covering portions of Arizona and Oregon, and has you going from fighting off bandits to brawling to racing horses. With tons of content to unlock, like guns, horses and clothes, Six-Guns is going to keep you busy for a while. Best of all, though, it’s free to download. It also makes the West look great with some solid graphics.

MinoMonsters (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

MinoMonsters is a whole lot like the extremely popular game Pokemon from Nintendo, but with touchscreen controls and a more on-the-go feel. The game has you controlling groups of monsters, leading them into battle against other monsters across four different areas. As you beat enemies, you can sometimes capture them to add them to your team, and every fight earns you experience points that make your monsters more powerful. The more you use your team, the better it becomes, which makes it great for taking into online multiplayer games against your friends. There’s a lot on offer in MinoMonsters, plus a cute, cartoonish art style that makes it very kid-friendly.
