The Appolicious weekend adviser for Oct. 3-5

The main event for many of us this weekend will no doubt be Sunday night’s Seinfeld cast reunion on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. There are many ways for your iPhone to serve  as your show within the show.

Fans of the Seinfeld and observational comedy in general should download Jerry Seinfeld Quotes. The 99-cent app has a nice (although not entirely comprehensive) assortment of Seinfeldian bits of wisdom. For those wanting to dig a little deeper, check out our list of Seinfeld-inspired options that reveal there are indeed apps for everything (even in a show about nothing.)

Another app designed to put a smile on your face is Penn & Teller Magic Trick. The app’s satirical sleight of hand, says Appolicious entertainment correspondent Kathryn Swartz, is worth the $1.99 download price.

For those looking to pay a little extra for volumes of wit in their pocket, the $5.99 app developed by McSweeny’s magazine is a worthy investment. The literary journal publishes iPhone-specific content that, as described by Steven Yaccino, “stands tall as its own handheld primary source for good writing on the go.”

Our own private Olympics
While it is disappointing that the United States was again denied the privilege of hosting an Olympic Games, the iPhone compensates nicely with its choices of virtual competition. Appolicious sports ace David Lister recommends a number of Olympic-themed games for the iPhone including  Playman Track & Field and Phonympics, both of which can be downloaded for 99 cents.

After the International Olympic Committee’s head-scratching decision to deny Chicago its bid, its fair to ask if any of the judges – like University of Florida Quarterback Tim Tebow – were suffering from concussions. If so, Lister has a few suggestions of various iPhone apps they can download for the purpose of getting their heads examined.

Don’t expect much if any coverage of future Olympiad’s on the new free ESPN Radio app, which carries audio streams, highlights and on-the-go podcasts from several participating ESPN stations.

Apps that can save your life
Far from fun and games, this week’s tragic events in Indonesia and American Somoa remind us all of the importance of preparing and responding to natural disasters. The iPhone, more than just a device to entertain and inform, can guide you and your family through potentially catastrophic events.

Emergency Preparation provides comprehensive response protocols for natural disasters ranging from floods to volcanoes. The $1.99 app, while a bit preachy, should be included on your device. WeatherX, at $4.99, pulls data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to alert you of extreme weather conditions across the globe.
